About us

Being in the hospital is challenging – but Chesed 24/7 transforms the experience for patients and their family members. We deliver fresh kosher meals to hundreds of bedsides each day, host thousands of people in our chesed rooms, and provide the sick with everything they could possibly need, both in and out of the hospital. Kosher food, hot coffee, a place to stay for Shabbos; even phone chargers or reading material – if there’s something a patient needs, Chesed 24/ provides it.

Our story

Chesed 24/7 was founded in 1989, when Rabbi and Mrs. Shulem Pesach and Chavie Greenberg realized that there was no place for an observant Jew to pray or find kosher food in the hospital. They were already involved in chesed, and were sending meals to kimpatorins (new mothers) in New Square. But this, they felt, was a critical void.

While others might shrug and say, “there’s nothing we can do about it,” the Greenbergs boldly requested a meeting with the president of Columbia University. At the meeting, they described the challenges faced by Jews in the hospital. Then they made a bold request.

“We’d like a room, so that we could set up a kosher coffee station, and provide food and comfort to Jews in the hospital,” they said. To their great shock, they soon received an answer:

Yes! Columbia University would provide the room! And so, Chesed 24/7 was born. Today, the organization runs chesed rooms in 24 hospitals, and has become a lifeline to patients and their loved ones.

A community project

Chesed 24/7 was adopted by the entire Jewish community. In their hometown, New Square, virtually every family is involved in its operation. Some cook, others package meals, others drive packages and patients to hospitals – and much more. Even the teens and children are involved!

Outside of New Square, the organization has mushroomed into a vast network, with volunteers and donors doing everything possible to keep the giant chesed machine operating around the clock.

“This organization is truly Chesed 24/7. We never stop. Our rooms serve people on Shabbos, on Pesach, and in middle of the night,” says Chavie Greenberg. Your support enables us to keep hosting, serving, and providing the sick with everything they could possibly need.

Our Mission

Chesed 24/7’s philosophy is that no one should ever be without food, shelter, and emotional support – no one should ever feel alone.

We remain firmly committed to providing assistance whenever and wherever we can – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
